CHANGES WITH CALIFORNIA SMOG CHECK PROGRAM

Effective January 1, 2013, the California Smog Check Program is changing. This is an effort by the State to further reduce vehicle tailpipe emissions. There will be four different smog stations:

Test Only
Test & Repair
Star Certified Test Only
Star Certified Test & Repair

What does all of this mean to the consumer? First of all, it means that fewer stations will be able to test directed vehicles. A directed vehicle is a vehicle that has been selected by the State and directed to what used to be called a "Test Only Station". Now these stations will be called Star Certified Stations and can be wither Test Only OR Test & Repair Star Certified Stations. These directed vehicles are usually older vehicles that the State feels have a higher chance of failing its smog inspection. If your DMV Registration Renewal notice says "Smog Inspection Required at a Star Certified Station" then will need to go to a Star Certified Test Only Station or a Star Certified Test & Repair Station. For vehicles whose registration renewals just say "Smog Inspection Required" you can go to ANY smog station.

In Antioch, less than half of the Test Only Stations made the grade to become Star Certified. For the consumer, this means fewer stations to choose from. This will mean longer wait times and less competitive pricing for a smog inspection. Here at Antioch Napa Auto Care, we made the grade and are now a STAR CERTIFIED TEST & REPAIR STATION. We can test and certify all vehicles as long as they will fit in the shop and are not a rare vehicle that we may not have the proper equipment for. We are also now able to Test & Repair vehicles owned by consumers who have qualified for the State Consumer Assistance Program (C.A.P.). Consumers can find a list of the different smog stations by going to www.smogcheck.ca.gov then click on "Find a Smog Check Station" in the left hand column.
